Windows XP will not find the text you are scanning for

You must have noticed that there is a difference in searching function between Windows XP and Windows prior to XP.

XP has a known issue for not finding a number of File Types when you do a Search for Files "containing text" or using the "A word or phrase in the file" option. Windows XP will not find the text you are scanning for.



Why ?

Microsoft wanted to make XP faster than the previous versions of Windows. Thus it eliminated the capability to search all file.XP checks only a number of file extensions.The cause is the lack of a PersistentHandler value in the Registry for this type of file.



How To Fix:-



1]Change the default value of PersistentHandler key:-



Strat>Run>Regedit>Ok

Now Navigate to [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.XXXPersistentHandler.You can also find PersistentHandler key by:-

Highlight HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT>goto Edit>Find>in the Find what: box type:PersistentHandler>Enter/Find Next

Now just change the default value:-Double click on the Default value present in the right pane and copy and paste this value:{5e941d80-bf96-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}.Close the registry editor and reboot your system.



Obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP and then turn on the Index file types with unknown extensions option.



2.A]Through Registry:-

To configure the search to include all file types:

1]Start>Run>Regedit>Ok. Now navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ContentIndex.

2.]Double-click the FilterFilesWithUnknownExtensions Value Name, a REG_DWORD data type, and set the data value to 1.

3] You must restart your computer for this change to take effect.



2.B]Through GUI:-



1] Click Start, and then click Search (or point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders).

2] Click Change preferences, and then click With Indexing Service (for faster local searches).

3]Click Change Indexing Service Settings (Advanced). Note that you do not have to turn on the Index service.

4] On the toolbar, click Show/Hide Console Tree.

5] In the left pane, right-click Indexing Service on Local Machine, and then click Properties.

6]On the Generation tab, click to select the Index files with unknown extensions check box, and then click OK.

7] Close the Indexing Service console.

One can control the information bar behaviour through the group policy also.



For Active X controls:-

Now click on Administrative Templates>Windows Components>Internet Explorer>Internet Control Panel>Security Page>Internet Zone>‘Automatic prompting for ActiveX installs’

If you enable this policy setting:-users will receive a prompt when a site instantiates an ActiveX control they do not have installed.

If you disable this policy setting:-ActiveX control installations will be blocked using the Information Bar. Users can click on the Information Bar to allow the ActiveX control prompt.

If you do not configure this policy setting:-the user’s preference will be used to determine whether to block ActiveX control installations using the Information Bar.





For File Downloads:-

Start>Run>Type in:gpedit.msc>ok

Now click on Administrative Templates>Windows Components>Internet Explorer>Internet Control Panel>Security Page>Internet Zone>‘Automatic prompting for file downloads’

If you enable this setting:-users will receive a file download dialog for automatic download attempts.

If you disable or do not configure this setting:-file downloads that are not user-initiated will be blocked, and users will see the Information Bar instead of the file download dialog. Users can then click the Information Bar to allow the file download prompt.





For Pop-Ups:-

If you enable this policy setting:- most unwanted pop-up windows are prevented from appearing.

Bluetooth is a wireless technology that is designed to replace cables between devices, such as printers, keyboards, and mice.



Bluetooth wireless technology operates over a short distance. Bluetooth devices use radio transmission, which enables computers, mobile phones, printers, keyboards, mice, and other devices to communicate with each other without cables.

Bluetooth wireless technology has been included in Service Pack 2 for Windows XP. This support was not previously available directly from Microsoft.



Bluetooth is essentially a spread-spectrum frequency hopping radio transceiver, which means that it operates in a spread-spectrum mode and changes frequency for every data packet some 1,600 times per second.Bluetooth operates on 79 1 megahertz (MHz) bands between 2.4000 GHz and 2.4835 GHz.





Bluetooth defines several profiles, which identifies the services and features supported. Several available Bluetooth profiles are supported in SP2 including the following:

Adding a device-pairing or bonding the two devices:-

When a Bluetooth device is added to your computer, address information is exchanged. Sometimes, access keys are also exchanged. It is known as pairing or bonding the two devices. When you add a device, one of the devices must be discoverable. Some devices let you turn discovery on and off. When We use Bluetooth to connect two computers, the computer that is added as a device must have discovery turned on. Turn on discovery by using the Options tab in Bluetooth Devices.



Steps to take on the computer:-

click Add in Bluetooth Settings>



In the Add Bluetooth Device Wizard>select the My device is set up and ready to be found check box>Next>Once you click Next, the search begins for any devices within range that are discoverable>Select the device>Next



After selecting the device, you have an option to enter a passkey for the device. This is a code used to control device access. In some cases the device will not require a passkey. Note that not all devices use or require a passkey for the pairing process,but HID don't require passkeys.

The passkey for the connection is valid for only 30 seconds.



Steps to take on the device:-

When the passkey has been verified, or the connection established without a passkey, the connection is complete. At this point, the device should be visible on the original computer.

In this case, you will see the computer name of the Windows XP computer that was added as a device.



Joining a Personal Area Network (PAN)

1]Click the Join a Personal Area Network option in the Bluetooth taskbar icon menu
