Windows XP will not find the text you are scanning for

Posted on 01:39 by Unknown
You must have noticed that there is a difference in searching function between Windows XP and Windows prior to XP.

XP has a known issue for not finding a number of File Types when you do a Search for Files "containing text" or using the "A word or phrase in the file" option. Windows XP will not find the text you are scanning for.

Why ?

Microsoft wanted to make XP faster than the previous versions of Windows. Thus it eliminated the capability to search all file.XP checks only a number of file extensions. The cause is the lack of a PersistentHandler value in the Registry for this type of file.

How To Fix:-

1]Change the default value of PersistentHandler key:-

Strat>Run>Regedit>Ok

Now Navigate to [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.XXXPersistentHandler.You can also find PersistentHandler key by:-

Highlight HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT>goto Edit>Find>in the Find what: box type:PersistentHandler>Enter/Find Next

Now just change the default value:-Double click on the Default value present in the right pane and copy and paste this value:{5e941d80-bf96-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}.Close the registry editor and reboot your system.

Obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP and then turn on the Index file types with unknown extensions option.

2.A]Through Registry:-

To configure the search to include all file types:

1]Start>Run>Regedit>Ok. Now navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ContentIndex.

2.]Double-click the FilterFilesWithUnknownExtensions Value Name, a REG_DWORD data type, and set the data value to 1.

3] You must restart your computer for this change to take effect.

2.B]Through GUI:-

1] Click Start, and then click Search (or point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders).

2] Click Change preferences, and then click With Indexing Service (for faster local searches).

3]Click Change Indexing Service Settings (Advanced). Note that you do not have to turn on the Index service.

4] On the toolbar, click Show/Hide Console Tree.

5] In the left pane, right-click Indexing Service on Local Machine, and then click Properties.

6]On the Generation tab, click to select the Index files with unknown extensions check box, and then click OK.

7] Close the Indexing Service console.

Windows Messenger

Posted on 20:55 by Unknown
It is an instant messaging program that lets you communicate in real time with other people.

Things you can do:-

1.You can make contacts of your friends, relatives, colleagues.

2.You can chat with them when they are on line.

3.You can send and receive messages

4.You can call a phone at a very cheap rate to anywhere.

5.Link directly to the e-mail inbox of your default e-mail program

6.Invite someone to play a game, look at a program on your computer, or use a whiteboard together.

7.Share pictures, music, or documents to your contacts

8.Use Remote Assistance to allow someone to help you with your computer

9.Microsoft .NET Alerts alert system keep you alert constantly.

What's New In XPSP2?

In Windows XPSP2 there have been a few changes in Windows Messenger's functionality.

Block Unsafe File Transfers:-

Files are blocked when both of the following occur:

•

The sender is not on your Contacts list.

•

Someone tries to send you a file that is considered unsafe

.jpg, .txt, and .gif extensions are generally considered safe and you can receive them still from persons who are not in your contact list.

You are prompted before opening the following file types:-

.doc, .ppt, .xls, .zip, .wpd,.pdf.exe, .cmd, .wsh, .bat, .vb, .vbs; .pif, .scr, .scf,.exe, .cmd, .wsh, .bat, .vb, .vbs; .pif, .scr, .scf.

any file that contains software code or script including macros, executables, and JavaScript.

or,with any other extension.

Required User Display Name:-

A user display name that is different from the user’s e-mail address is now required. If a display name is not provided, one cannot log on.

On the File menu, the user’s display name is stored in a text file, along with any associated text messages. Virus applications can discover the e-mail address in the text file and use it to propagate to the user’s contacts through these same instant messaging conversations. Thus it's important.

Relationship With The Firewall:-

To give Windows Messenger permission to connect to the Internet, click Start>Control Panel>Security Options>Windows Firewall>Exceptions, and then, in Programs and Services, click Windows Messenger.

Bluetooth

Posted on 04:26 by Unknown
Bluetooth is a wireless technology that is designed to replace cables between devices, such as printers, keyboards, and mice.

Bluetooth wireless technology operates over a short distance. Bluetooth devices use radio transmission, which enables computers, mobile phones, printers, keyboards, mice, and other devices to communicate with each other without cables.

Bluetooth wireless technology has been included in Service Pack 2 for Windows XP. This support was not previously available directly from Microsoft.

Bluetooth is essentially a spread-spectrum frequency hopping radio transceiver, which means that it operates in a spread-spectrum mode and changes frequency for every data packet some 1,600 times per second.Bluetooth operates on 79 1 megahertz (MHz) bands between 2.4000 GHz and 2.4835 GHz.

Bluetooth defines several profiles, which identifies the services and features supported. Several available Bluetooth profiles are supported in SP2 including the following:

● Human Interface Device (HID):-

● Personal Area Networking (PAN)

● Dial-up Networking (DUN)

● Object Exchange (OBEX)

● Hard Copy Replacement

● Serial Port Profile (SPP)

The following Bluetooth support components are installed to %windir%\system32

Start>Run>Type in: %windir%\system32>Ok

And to view the drivers which support bluetooth :-

Start>Run>Type in: %windir%\system32\drivers>Ok

Adding a device-pairing or bonding the two devices:-

When a Bluetooth device is added to your computer, address information is exchanged. Sometimes, access keys are also exchanged. It is known as pairing or bonding the two devices. When you add a device, one of the devices must be discoverable. Some devices let you turn discovery on and off. When We use Bluetooth to connect two computers, the computer that is added as a device must have discovery turned on. Turn on discovery by using the Options tab in Bluetooth Devices.

Steps to take on the computer:-

Start> Run>type bthprops.cpl>Ok

click Add in Bluetooth Settings>

In the Add Bluetooth Device Wizard>select the My device is set up and ready to be found check box>Next>Once you click Next, the search begins for any devices within range that are discoverable>Select the device>Next

After selecting the device, you have an option to enter a passkey for the device. This is a code used to control device access. In some cases the device will not require a passkey. Note that not all devices use or require a passkey for the pairing process, but HID don't require passkeys.

The passkey for the connection is valid for only 30 seconds.

Steps to take on the device:-

When the passkey has been verified, or the connection established without a passkey, the connection is complete. At this point, the device should be visible on the original computer.

In this case, you will see the computer name of the Windows XP computer that was added as a device.

Joining a Personal Area Network (PAN)

1]Click the Join a Personal Area Network option in the Bluetooth taskbar icon menu

2]Double-click the Bluetooth Network Connection icon in the Network Connections under Control Panel

3]Click View Bluetooth network devices in the Network Tasks pane in Network Connections

How to add Modem:-

1]Start>Run>type telephon.cpl>OK.

2]On the Modems tab>Add>Bluetooth Device dialog box opens.

3]select a Bluetooth device to use as a modem.

How to add a Printer:-

Select A Bluetooth printer in the Add Printer Wizard, the computer searches for Bluetooth printers. When it locates a printer, select it to install. To install the printer, install drivers for the printer. When the printer is installed, the printer port appears as a Bluetooth virtual printer port on the Ports tab of the printer's Properties dialog box.

How to send a File:-

Start>Run>Type %windir%\system32\fsquirt.exe>Ok>Next>Select Send a file>Browse where you want to send>Next>When the receiving computer or device is ready to receive the file, click Next.

How to receive a File:-

Posted on 15:15 by Unknown
What is Slipsreaming?

This is a way to integrate Service Pack 2 in to Windows XP installation point that may be on CD or a network share.

What is the main advantage of slipstreaming?

It is a way of installing Service Pack 2 with the original installation. Thus you don't have to waste your time bty installing the service pack separetely.

Is there any potential pitfall?

Yes.You can not uninstall Service Pack as the whole thing is integrated with the original opertaing system.

Installing Windows XP Professional Integrated with a Service Pack on a network distribution share:-

1]Connect to the network or computer on which you want to create the distribution folder.

2]Create a distribution folder named WinXP\PRO, type: mkdir E:\WinXP\PRO

3]Insert the XP PRO CD into the CD-ROM drive, and then copy the contents of the CD to the distribution folder ;thus to copy the CD content to the distribution folder named WinXP\PRO, type: xcopy D:\ E:\WinXP\PRO /e

4]Apply Service Pack 2 located in the Sevice Pack CD,present in the CD-ROM drive to the Windows XP Professional installation files located in the distribution folder named WinXP\PRO, type: D:\XPSP2.exe /integrate:E:\WinXP\PRO

5]After setup integrates the service pack files with Windows XP, Windows XP Professional can be deployed to users' computers from the network distribution share in attended or unattended mode.
